Keep your log safe: Add to Home Screen
iPhone (Safari): tap Share, then Add to Home Screen.
Android (Chrome): tap the three-dot menu, then Install app.
Safari can delete a website's saved data after 7 days without a visit. The Home Screen app keeps it. Data typed in Safari does not carry over into the Home Screen app: use Backup then Restore (More, then Data) to move it.

What counts
Counts toward the cap
- Cash tips, and tips on a card, check, or app. The customer chose to leave them and set the amount.
- Tips you get from a tip pool or a tip-out from a coworker.
- Minus tips you pay out to others (bussers, bar, runners).
Does not count
- Service charges and auto-gratuities: a mandatory 18% large-party charge, a required gratuity, or a payment screen that forces a tip above zero. These are wages, not tips.
- Non-cash tips like tickets or gifts. They are still income on your return, but they are not qualified tips.
Eligibility checklist (info only)
- Your job is on the Treasury list of occupations that customarily received tips on or before Dec 31, 2024.
- The tips are on a W-2 (box 12 code TP), a 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, or 1099-K, or you report them on Form 4137.
- You have a valid SSN for work. If you're married, you file jointly.
- Self-employed: the deduction can't be more than the net profit of the business where you earned the tips.
- Up to $25,000 per return (a married couple filing jointly shares one $25,000). Available whether or not you itemize.
- Phase-out: above $150,000 MAGI ($300,000 married filing jointly), the deduction drops $100 for each full $1,000 over.
- Tax years 2025 through 2028 only.
Keep a daily record
Keep a daily tip record and report cash tips of $20 or more in a month to your employer by the 10th of the next month. Write down tips you paid out and who got them (use the note field).
Good to know
2025: tips may not be shown separately on 2025 forms. Notice 2025-69 explains how to figure the amount.
Late-December tips paid on a January paycheck: this app uses the shift date. Your W-2 may draw the line differently; your preparer can reconcile.
Specified service trades or businesses (SSTB): transition relief currently applies to listed occupations. This app does not model SSTB rules, and the rule may change.
